MultiNET – Our Story

Where did it all begin?

The origination of MultiNET Home Loans, as it is known today, goes back over 40 years to the early 1970s, when our founder, John Smyth, immigrated to South Africa from Ireland. He entered the real estate industry in 1973 and was one of the first estate agents to pass the CIEA examination in 1976. John was consistently rated in the top 5 performers list in the companies where he was employed. During 1987 he formed the Network Homes Group and within 2 years, in 1988, it was listed as one of the top 30 companies in South Africa. Over the years, John was involved in the training of hundreds of estate agents, with many of them going on to run their own successful businesses.

MultiNET – our background

The Multinet Property Group was formed in January 1998, with its target market being the smaller independent firms employing 1-15 estate agents and with a strong presence within a specific area.

Further expansion was to come. As an independent property group, the company entered the bond origination arena in 2003 as MultiNET Mortgages. The company has always followed a strict policy of operating in a responsible manner to ensure longevity within the origination industry and the greater South African property sector. As a tight-knit organisation, we have the ability to keep our ears close to the ground and to deliver on our promise of being a trustworthy originator that speaks to the real needs of consumers. In November 2017 the company was officially registered as MultiNET Home Loans (Pty) Limited.

Following the sad and untimely passing in 2017 of our founding father, John Smyth, the company continued to be run by the executive team, under the solid guidance of interim CEO, Rita Brand. It was fairly inevitable that there would be some speculation in the market around MultiNET’s future. However, the executive team were pleased and proud to inform our partners that John’s unwavering commitment to MultiNET remaining a 100 percent independently owned company would continue to live on, and that there was no intention of selling to, or merging with, any other company.

Then came the announcement that brought exceptionally good news and great excitement – Shaun Rademeyer, previously the CEO of BetterBond, would be joining the MultiNET executive team as Chief Executive Officer in July 2018, following a six-month restraint of trade with his former employer. As the MultiNET interim CEO, Rita Brand, said at the time, “Our goal is to continue to provide an alternative origination option and build a sustainable origination industry that subscribes to free market principles. However, to maintain the focus on our people, business partners and customers, we need a new CEO. At the same time, Shaun needs a new challenge, so this is a perfect fit, and we are really looking forward to welcoming him to the company.”
